Tottenham Sets Sights on 26-Year-Old Potential Record-Breaking Defender for Summer Transfer

Tottenham Hotspur continues its pursuit of a fresh central defender and is now reportedly planning to approach Ko Itakura.

That’s the news according to a recent Sky Sports report in Germany, which provides additional information on the 26-year-old player.

Manager Ange Postecoglou is rapidly assembling an impressive team at Tottenham.

Significant additions made so far, such as Guglielmo Vicario and James Maddison, are expected to enhance the team’s performance right away.

The key area Tottenham urgently needs to strengthen this summer is the central defence.

Cristian Romero is foreseen to maintain his spot in the team regardless of his inconsistent performance towards the end of the previous season.

However, a new partner for Romero at the back is needed and several players have been linked so far.

Potential replacements include Dutch footballer Micky Van de Ven, Edmond Tapsoba, and Fulham’s Tosin Adarabioyo.

Ko Itakura from Japan is the latest addition to the list of potential recruitments for Tottenham’s summer transfer.

The defender from Borussia Monchengladbach has previously been praised by his former manager, Daniel Farke, who described him as a player who ‘could make history’.

Itakura could have the opportunity to prove that in the Premier League next season, following his challenging debut in England.

Tottenham Interested in Centre-Back Ko Itakura

The report from Sky Sports in Germany indicates that Itakura is on the verge of moving away from Borussia Monchengladbach, and Napoli and Tottenham are among the top clubs showing interest.

According to journalist Florian Plettenberg, “[Ko] Itakura is receptive to a change. I’ve heard this loud and clear.”

Some Premier League fans might be familiar with Ko Itakura’s name.

Last year’s World Cup saw him representing Japan, where he participated in all three group matches before suspension kept him out of their last-16 match against Croatia.

Itakura was contracted with Manchester City for three years but never played an official match for the team.

Itakura went on to play for FC Groningen and FC Schalke on loan, until Gladbach acquired him for £4.2m.

Tottenham is showing an interest in Itakura after his outstanding performances last season with the German side in the Bundesliga.

With 24 appearances under his belt, Itakura took a break from the team due to an injury that occurred just before the World Cup.

Itakura has proven himself to be an expert passer and an attentive reader of the game.

While not particularly a master of tackles, this could work in Tottenham’s favor if he is paired with Romero in the defence line-up.
