There is speculation about a potential move by Tottenham Hotspur for Hakan Calhanoglu, the Inter Milan midfielder who was previously described by Gary Lineker as ‘uniquely skilled’.
So far, Tottenham has had a promising start in the summer transfer window, with new recruits including Guglielmo Vicario and James Maddison.
The transfer of Manor Solomon to Tottenham is also nearing completion, with a medical examination scheduled for today. In addition, Dejan Kulusevski and Pedro Porro have also permanently moved to Tottenham.
However, it is suggested that Tottenham isn’t stopping there. Ange Postecoglou, the current manager, is planning a comprehensive revamp of the team’s lineup.
Despite a plethora of choices for the midfield, Tottenham is purportedly considering a move for Hakan Calhanoglu.
It has been reported by Inter Live that Tottenham might attempt to entice Inter Milan into selling Calhanoglu by offering a £30 million bid.
The 29-year-old Calhanoglu, who played a significant role in Inter Milan’s journey to the Champions League final last season, might be considered for sale by the club.
In the past year, Calhanoglu has primarily played in a deeper midfield position for Inter and has proven to be an adept game creator.
During the 2021 European Championships, where he represented Turkey, Calhanoglu received commendation from Gary Lineker.
Lineker’s View on Calhanolgu
During the coverages of the Euros by the BBC, Lineker spoke highly of Calhanoglu.
“He is a player with unique skillset,” Lineker said. “He is creative.” This quote was reported by HITC.
If outgoing transfers occur, Tottenham may need to consider recruiting another midfielder before the window closes.
The club’s current strategy under Postecoglou involves deploying two No8s and one more defensive midfielder. Despite recent addition of Maddison, there is a lack of depth in the No8 role at Tottenham.
While Rodrigo Bentancur seems a suitable choice for the versatile mid-pitch position, he could be absent from early season play.
Calhanoglu could potentially fill this gap effectively, and seems likely to thrive under Postecoglou’s management. However, at 29, he does not necessarily fit the typical age range of new signings for Tottenham.
